Read Write Inc. Phonics at The Oaks
At The Oaks Community Primary School, we use the Read Write Inc. (RWI) phonics programme to teach early reading and writing. RWI is a structured and systematic approach to phonics, developed by Ruth Miskin, and is proven to get children reading quickly and confidently.
What is Read Write Inc.?
Read Write Inc. is a comprehensive literacy programme designed for children aged 4 to 7, although it can be used as an intervention for older pupils. It supports children to:
- Recognise letter sounds (phonemes) and match them to written letters (graphemes)
- Blend sounds to read words
- Segment words to spell
- Build confidence with reading comprehension and writing fluency
Children are grouped according to their phonics knowledge and taught in small groups to ensure learning is at the right pace for them. Assessments are carried out regularly to track progress and regroup where needed.
Why Phonics?
Phonics is the foundation of early reading. By learning how letters and sounds work together, children can decode words and start reading independently. This unlocks every area of the curriculum and fosters a lifelong love of reading.
How You Can Help at Home
You play a vital role in your child’s reading journey. Here are some simple ways you can help at home:

Phonics Screening Check
In Year 1, children take part in the national Phonics Screening Check. This is a short, one-to-one check to confirm whether children have learned the appropriate phonics decoding skills. We ensure children are well prepared and confident, and we will always share your child’s progress with you.
